Innovations in technology, construction practices, materials, and automation have made vehicles last longer than ever. However, all new vehicles are sold with some kind of warranty, and that warranty can be difficult to understand if you aren’t fluent in the automotive and legal lingo that is used in the contracts.
Most warranties that are sold on new vehicles are referred to as “limited warranties”, meaning that the warranty is restricted in one way or another. This could be in the number of owners eligible to call upon the warranty, or the types of repairs that are covered. Regardless, any warranty is only required to cover what is stated on the warranty contract.
An “unlimited warranty” is a warranty where any owner of the vehicle, regardless of whether or not they were the original purchaser, can call upon the warranty to pay for any covered mechanical repairs. This type of warranty is very uncommon, though a dealer may offer it is part of the negotiation when purchasing.
The most common type of warranty is the “as is” warranty. This type of warranty exempts the seller of the vehicle, be it a dealer or private party, from any repairs that must be made to the vehicle after the sale. Though you may be able to seek legal recourse in very rare circumstances, a vehicle purchased with an “as is” warranty has, in essence, no warranty. You are responsible for all damages, repairs, and maintenance.
You may also purchase additional warranty coverage from third party companies, such as Smart Auto Warranty, AA Auto Warranty, or Car Warranties Direct. These types of warranties are often more limited than the traditional warranty associated with a new vehicle, but they still offer good protection provided that meet all of the guidelines.
